Black is Beautiful is our version of the wonderful collaborative effort launched by Weathered Souls Brewing to raise awareness for the injustices people of color face daily and raise funds for police brutality reform and legal defenses for those who have been wronged. This initiative is special to our industry and serves as a guiding example that when beer is mindful and engaged, it can be a powerful agent for improvement.⠀
⠀
This beer is a lush, rich, earthy chocolate, full-roast stout that rounds out at 8% ABV and benefits from Sleep Walk cacao nibs that our friends from Dark Matter Coffee kindly contributed. Proceeds from Black is Beautiful will be donated to Legal Aid Chicago because we feel it best aligns with the directives from the #blackisbeautifulbeer movement as created by Weathered Souls Brewery.⠀
⠀
As advocates for people living in poverty, Legal Aid Chicago witnesses how structural racism thwarts the health and stability of low-income communities and perpetuates the cycle of poverty. Free legal aid is a tool to fight racism in all its forms. Legal Aid Chicago joins with legal aid organizations across the country to speak out and work against racial injustice, including racially biased policing.⠀

Sent my direction way back during NBS BIF #...12? by @FBarber.
Pours a lovely obsidian in the glass. Good thick two fingers of silky foam that sticks around, leaving incredible lacing on the glass.
Nose is largely just roasty toasty malts. Burnt pumpernickle gets a show, a touch of black coffee. Slightly creamy with a faint sweet upturn to the back end. Maybe it' milk chocolate, maybe it's pudding? As it warms, coffee fills out a bit, and the chocolate becomes a little more prevalent, increasing the profile in my estimation.
Flavour reflects the initial impressions of the nose moreso than the later ones. Some cream (maybe lactose, maybe not), some roasty malts, and a goodly amount of bitter coffee. I don't get nearly as much chocolate here as on the nose.
Thin but sticky. Decent carbonation.
Thanks for sending this my direction, Frank!

16 oz. can. Pours black with a deep mocha head. Smells of cocoa and roasted malt. Moderate alcohol presence. Tastes much the same. Chocolate, roasted malt, and alcohol. Restrained sweetness makes the alcohol more prominent. Medium heavy. Not bad.

Canned 2/12/21; drank 2/22/21 @ the Yarchives.
Black appearance.
A rough pour yielded a HUGE tan head; nice lace.
Dark chocolate, mild fresh earth & faint cream notes in the nose.
Creamy, medium mouthfeel.
Dark chocolate & mild cream flavors up front; mild fresh earth notes on the finish.
A bit thin for the robust flavors; reminded me of a Baltic porter more than anything. Good, not great.
