Uptide Experimental Lager. For a bite size take, Uptide is FADER with an entirely new yeast strain that creates something of a very different, extra lager. If Lager’s specific pieces get to you, the sulfur and how grain flows out and around the yeast that defines these beers, then Uptide amplifies those traits while layering a new Thiol derivative experience.
Let’s rewind to the beginning: Matt Young, Director of Brewing Ops at Half Acre, worked with @omegayeast to use their entirely new lager yeast strain, just meeting the world, that’s edited using modern genetic techniques to have the ability to convert thiol precursors to flavor-active thiols in beer. What are thiols you might ask? Thiols are a group of sulfur-containing compounds that we are just now learning play a pretty big role in our perception of tropical fruit aromas in hoppy beer. Here is where we find a very deep trench of science.
What’s important, is that we decided to work this strain through the medium of FADER. Its time spent in our cellar was turbulent, at times throwing off some sensory impact that we’ve yet to experience. Many weeks later, we were left with very pointed lager traits with other, more tropical notes that land experimental, but worthy and exciting in a longer timeline of exploration. So, all you sulfur fans cruising the lager forums wondering who’s putting lagers over the top, here we go. UPTIDE.

Pale gold, huge head of rocky suds with a halo of spotty lacing in the glass.
Dry and crisp, vaguely papery library book aroma, soft grains, hints of fruit.
Taste has a more expressive yeast character, some nebulous fruit notes that must be from the thiols. Kinda white grapey. The sulfur is present but thankfully tolerable. It comes off a little as a cheap lager due to the yeast. Mild hops, softly grainy, feels less hoppy than Fader somehow.
I’m not too sure about the brewery statement that lager fans love sulfur, as that’s not really true at all. Sulfur is pretty much a turnoff for me, but it’s not too overwhelming here. Overall, it’s pretty drinkable, though more hop character would be nice.

Buyer beware. My ratings are for the attempt, not the result. This isn't a refreshing, summer lager. It's dry, hoppy and kind of cottonmouthy.

I have a new favorite lager! They can often taste a little too similar to be truly special (even on the really good ones) but I’m loving the lemony dry hop bite here. As with lagers it’s light and crushable. I’m off to HA to buy another 8 cans!
