Early fall had farmers picking whole cone hops and shipping them to us overnight to brew a wet hop beer. We kicked up a black beer with a very sticky hop character. Beware of the StickyFat Bear.

This is a solid rendition of a dark/black IPA with some extra wet-hop taste and feel to it, not to mention aroma. I really enjoy the beer, even if it is a style that can't decide on itself. It looks like a porter, tastes like a black IPA, and smells like wet bud (yes, that kind). While I can't really include the can or label art as criteria in the score, that's also pretty great. Well done HA, really like the 2017 version. Different every fall....

I had this on draft @ Half Acre's taproom on 10/15/25.
Brown appearance with orange blushes when held to the light.
Nice tan head; strong lacing remained.
Orange citrus, medium roast coffee bean & dank ganja notes in the nose.
Medium mouthfeel.
Orange citrus & mild medium roast coffee bean flavors up front; dank, dry ganja notes on the finish.
I enjoyed this more than most 'wet hop' beers; I think the roast-y, darker malts hide some the the dirty sweat sock notes I usually pick up. Still not great, in my opinion, but certainly drinkable.

Another review of a beer first consumed at the Sierra Nevada Single, Fresh, Wet & Wild Festival in Chico, CA. Its funny looking back in retrospect, how 'hot' black ipas were back then, I would guess about half of the breweries there brought 3-4 beers, one of which was a black ipa. Crazy to think breweries were so deep in the trend, that they were trying to showcase single and wet hopped (this) beers on a black ipa platform, and yet so many maintain this 'we don't chase trends' ethos in stark contrast. Let's get more into the beer.
Black ale pours black. Pretty respectable light beige head on it, 3/4" deep, very good retention. From an appearance standpoint, its tough to believe this is anything but top notch. Mixture of roasted malt, pine like bitterness, hints of caramel and weed in the nose.
Taste follows the nose as they say, its all there. Prickly bitter hop notes pair with a prickly carbonation level immediately leading me to conclude this is pretty good for a style I'm not really into. I have no idea what the fresh hops were, but I'd go ahead and guess CTZ and/or Chinook based on what I came across.

22 oz bomber bought at brewery 2 weeks ago. Poured into pint glass. For all that's supposed to be going on in this beer, none of the flavors stand out. Drinkable but disappointingly so.
