West Coast India Pale Ale
For 2025, we’re introducing the Vallejo Family of IPAs with three distinct beers that explore Southern Hemisphere hop variations for this classic West Coast recipe. It’s Vallejo all year long. First up, Sunrise Vallejo will arrive in January featuring New Zealand hops that elevate this clear, crisp IPA with aromas of sweet melon, berry and dried pine, warming your senses against winter’s cold, dark grip.

16oz can, dated 12.19.2024, poured into a 16oz tumbler glass. Enjoyed on 01.08.2025, reviewed from Tasting Journal.
The beer pours a bright golden color, light amber hues, very clear with a large foamy white head, excellent lacing. The aroma is nice, herbal tea, pine, grass clippings, grapefruit peel, citrus juice, tropical fruits and some pale grain. The flavors are good, dank and green hop, quite bitter and earthy, grapefruit forward citrus, floral, grainy, with mineral water at the finish. The mouthfeel is good, coating, crisp, lively medium, body, smooth with a very dry finish.
Verdict: A nice IPA from Half Acre. Super earthy, very bitter and green, but clean flavors and an easy session.

16oz can, date stamped 012325
L: yellow-golden body with a bit of haze; foamy eggshell head leaves tons of lacing on the glass
S: melon, lemon-lime, pine
T: melon, peach, lemony citrus, tropical fruit, dry pine as the brewer suggests
F: medium body, creamy yet resinous, balanced finish
O: good Vallejo variant, if you want to call it that

Look - look like a hazy ipa instead of just an IPA
Smell and taste - citrusy grapefruity effervescent. Fairly classic but still pretty nice
Feel - medium body and carb
Overall - nice ipa

16oz can purchased from the fridge as part of a 4-pack for $12.49. Canned on 12/02/24, so this beer is only three weeks old.
Look: Very pale orange/gold color. Nice clarity. There was a fluffy off-white head two fingers tall that reduced to a thin layer. Steady stream of fine carbonation rising up the glass along with the rhythmic larger bubbles. The beer gained a soft haze after pouring the rest of the can.
Smell: Big citrus aromas with grapefruit and orange rind. There's a bit of dankness and resinous pine as well. Some of those classic Nelson Sauvin white grape jelly and passion fruit notes too, even though this smells much more of citrus than anything else. Secondary notes of guava and peach gummy rings. It has an earthy, peppery finish with green bell pepper notes after swirling the glass. After pouring the bottom of the can, I pick up a nice, sweet vanilla creaminess that is really interesting and inviting. Has a nice orange creamsicle aroma. This beer smells really nice.
Taste: Very tasty. The taste is as expected from the nose - very citrusy up front with a subtle juiciness and sweetness up front, which quickly moves to rindy, pithy, bitter, and dry. The finish lingers long with dankness and lots of mandarin orange rind and grapefruit rind character. This beer is quite astringent and it is very much in the West Coast Style; I guess that one of the things that this beer lacks is maltiness and caramel/crystal malt character. Eventually, some of the light malt character comes through after the aggressive hop character subsides. The piney notes came through more as I drank through the glass. Not sure why, but I can see how this is an appropriate winter IPA.
Feel: The beer has a slightly fluffy mouthfeel, which is nice for a West Coast IPA. It's medium bodied with a nice oily, slightly chewy mouthfeel. In some ways, and this is a compliment, it reminds me of some of the Maine Beer Company IPAs with the vanilla creaminess and the slightly fluffy body.
Overall: I like this but I'm not sure if it is quite as enjoyable as the original Vallejo. That being said, it does come close. I also think that the experience improved after I poured the bottom of the can - the flavors became rounder and more balanced. I am curious how exactly the recipes/ingredients are different. Based on my memory and old review, the original Vallejo seemed to have a bit more of a juicy and dank character than this one. I also think that the Nelson Sauvin hop was the star of the original Vallejo show, where it may be playing a supporting role here? Not sure what other hops are at play here, but I would think that Citra is involved somehow. Not surprised that this is another winner from Half Acre, not to mention at a great price!
