a nice malty saison, almost has a sort of biere de garde or mars vibe to it, with a simple and estery french type saison yeast and a lot of deeper amber colored grains in the mix, less funk, less obvious european hops, not even apparently all that wheaty, but i like the toasted nature of the malt, the earthy dry spice of the rye, and the depth this has overall, even if the yeast seems a bit generic as these go. the color is deep and copper, clearish for what it is, with an off white inch of fizzy head on it. aroma is the vinous esters of the french type saison yeast, not done too warm or anything, but certainly reaching my nostrils first. behind that is a harvesty and autumnal grain mix with the peppery rye right there with the sweeter stuff, nice. the flavor kind of hits more all at once, its never really sweet which is cool, and the grains never quite overtake the yeast, and it does get just a little farmy there at the end, the rye helps with that, and marries in well with the yeast, i think a nice recipe overall. the carbonation is where i like it for the style, which is on the higher end, and this seems as well made as anything else we had in here. itd be awesome in a wine barrel with a brett pitch! for now its a little bit simple, but earthy and agricultural and pretty good.
