Da kine is an Extra Special Bitter (ESB) or Bitter Brown Ale made with a blend of 6 different malts and 5 different hop varieties. In HCE (Hawaiian Creole English), “da kine” is used generally to mean almost anything, particularly when referring to a thing whose name is not known or whose name does not come immediately to mind. It is used often as a stand-in for another word, as “whatchamacallit” is used in the English language.

On tap:
Big toast notes in the taste and a decent bit of nuttiness in the nose have me thinking this is more like an American Brown ale.
Pours a medium dark brown, with maybe a little murkiness. Medium thin collar of head.
Nose is a bit nutty, with a decent burnt toast aspect that is aided by a woody bitterness.
Taste is familiar with the nut and toast aspects. The beer does have a pop of hoppy bitterness, piney in nature. The burnt toast aspect of the opening, though has this with less balance even though the malt and hops are both noticeable. Feel is a bit carbonated, and the prickly nature is a tad harsh, especially initially.
To repeat, I think this fits an American Brown Ale profile better than the ESBs I’m used to due to the strong toasted grain profile and less smooth mouthfeel. As a brown ale, it’s decent and would be better with a less harsh feel.
