Exceptionally hoppy and with a really full mouthfeel for a pilsner. Something you'd take for an APA or New England IPA or something along those lines if you weren't paying attention, because it doesn't have those characteristics you'd normally associate with a pilsner.
Soft hazy golden yellow colour, moderate head with good retention and generous lace. Handsome looking beer. Nose is fruity and grainy. Tasty fruit (grapefruit) and malt flavours going , more fulsome mouthfeel than you'd expect from a pilsner.
So, well off the beaten track for what you might expect for the style, but an interesting drink.

473 mL can from the LCBO; no packaging date. Served well chilled.
Pours slightly hazy with a pale blonde hue; more than one finger of foamy white head soon collects atop. It seeps away at a steady, casual pace, leaving behind a lovely webbed coat of lace before eventually being reduced to a frothy collar and a patchy cap of soapy film. Looks great. I am getting a fair bit of lemon on the nose, along with some grainy pale malts and a slight doughy sweetness. Minor hints of floral hops and indistinct tropical fruit; not exactly traditional for a pils, but certainly not objectionable, either.
A solid pale lager that I liked right off the bat; its pale malt backing is grainy and crackery, with a bit of a doughy sweetness to it as well. The hops, however, are quick to grab your attention, with more citrusy lemon pith coming through loud and clear; notes of orange and herbal, spicy hops also develop on the back end of the sip. Finishes with an earthy, herbal hop note that briefly persists into the aftertaste, leaving the palate feeling near dry. Light in body, with good, firm, appropriate carbonation levels for the style; feels crisp and a tad frothy in the mouth. Excellent drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.86, a B+. I honestly enjoyed Mascot Pilsner a lot more than I expected to. I've no idea how old this can actually is... but I can tell you that it has spent at least 2 months in my own fridge, and yet it still tastes quite fresh. Far from a traditional pils - it's really more of an APL in spirit, with its fairly assertive hop bill leaning almost entirely in that direction - but I'm too busy enjoying the rest of my glass to quibble over that sort of detail. If you like pale lagers, this one is definitely worth a go.
