473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Aug 25 2023 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a hazy golden-orange colour, with several large clumps of sediment quickly settling out. Gathered atop is nearly two fingers of foamy, fluffy, fine-bubbled white head that gradually diminishes; about five minutes later, I'm left with a generously frothy collar and thin cap. Lots of lovely lacing, too - looks great so far. Lemon juice and peel on the nose, as well as grapefruit and orange; just a touch of lime zest, with suggestions of stone fruit and floral, spicy hops.
It's tasty - I'm getting some bready, lightly caramelized malt sweetness in the background, with notes of grapefruit, orange and lemon; maybe just a hint of something tropical, e.g. cantaloupe. It finishes with floral hops and piney, earthy bitterness, followed by a mildly earthy aftertaste with muddled citrus that doesn't linger for long. Light in body, with moderately active carbonation that contributes to this brew's crisp, spritzy texture; goes down smooth, with excellent drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.82, a worthwhile B+. Mascot's Mondo is a solid session ale that lives up to its West Coast claims. Their website lists the hops as Cascade, Centennial and Amarillo, but it also lists the abv at 4.5% (my can says 4.9%), so that info may not be totally accurate. Either way, that trio is about as 'West Coast' as it gets, and the brew's piney, citrusy flavour profile gives me no reason to doubt their presence. I don't drink session IPAs on a regular basis, but I enjoyed this one more than most, and would pick it up occasionally if it were available around here. Worth a look if you're in the market for an old-school hoppy pale ale, without the usual double whammy of bitterness and alcohol.
