Crowler, tulip, picked up from RVA location 11/20/22 (yesterday).
It pours a medium brown, much like a brown ale, unfiltered, and with no head. I think altitude change on the way home broke the seal here, so I’m expecting few bubbles.
The aroma has an inviting sweetness, like pleasantly caramelized sweet onions or sauce. There’s a little spice to it and complex maltiness. Candied nuts, cotton candy, butterfinger.
More of the same. The spice is light, but it’s got great brown ale flavors and the sweetness is just right. Rye sourness and maybe a little diacetyl.
I’m definitely going to give the beer the benefit of the doubt on the feel, as I’m sure it was well carbonated when it was poured. The body is light though.
I enjoyed this first Roggenbier immensely. I’d like to see more examples. I’ve been to Germany several times and have never encountered it there either.
