my first from these guys, can courtesy of my friend, a fun beer, but a little odd too, not sure why they call it a double ipa at just 7.1% abv, thats strange to me, but i like the beer, it does drink kind of big, and its a good first impression overall. pours not quite clear, malty looking rusty orange, and with a high inch and a half of creamy khaki head, awesome retention and thick lace on the edges of the glass. the aroma on this is bitter orange, nutty malt maybe boiled a little too long, and a spicy grassy aspect to the hop profile along with the citrus, mineral forward but not quite metallic or anything. the flavor is well balanced, lots of body and grain character to this, but drier than it smells when i drink it, and it ends up feeling kind of like a double, a little fuller, which supports a ton of hops, including some real bitterness, this has a great back end pop to it, but the hops start with lemon and orange zest notes, move to a grassy, tea-like herbal middle, and hit on pine, weed, and even a peppery thing at the end. its frothy feeling, almost creamy, and smooth going down, expressive carbonation lightens it up some, and the mineral profile is a defining element of this too, more of that as it warms. no sign of the alcohol, but this still does have some weight behind it, just expect the style to be stronger than this. not a mind bender, but a fine can of beer, ill look forward to my next one from these guys. this kicked off an epic razor clam chowder cookoff with my wife, so i will keep a fond memory of this one!
