Big Oyster Brewery "Duck Dive"
16 fl. oz. can coded "BY THE PPL 4 THE PPL DUCK DUCK DRINK CANNED ON 12/01/22". Sampled on 01/15/22.
$4.49 @ Total Wine & More, Wilmington, DE
Notes via stream of consciousness: The label reads "American Pale Ale brewed with Belma, Rakau & Amarillo Hops" but also notes "Big Oyster Brewery is proud to support Delaware Ducks Unlimited by introducing Duck Dive IPA". So what is it, an APA or an IPA? It's poured a clear deep-golden/amber colored body beneath a finger's width of white foam. The aroma is mildly hoppy with some fruit and pine and I'm not getting any malt coming through. On to the taste... there's some basic biscuity malt present, and a firm bitterness balances it leading to a dry, bittersweet finish with some fruit lingering shortly followed by emerging pine and earth. The hops give off notes of apricot, orange, plum, tart and sweet red berries, black currant, and ash gourd. It's an interesting fruitiness that you don't normally find. In the mouth it's medium-light in body and crisp with a standard carbonation level. Overall it seems very clean and polished. I'm about halfway through it at this point and the head remains! It's thin, perhaps an eight of an inch or less, but I love having a solid cap of foam covering the entire surface of my beer. The lacing is OK as well, but not great. So, I'm brought back to my original question, is this an APA or an IPA? I have to go with APA as it's not hoppy enough in the aroma to be an IPA. What it does have is uniqueness as this is far from the floral and citrus character that so many APAs (following Sierra Nevada APA) have. Beyond that it just seems to be really well made, and I appreciate that as there seems to be some focus on that as opposed to so many of the more bombastic beers on the market today. This probably won't get a lot of love but as a fan of the everyday 'sit down and relax with a standard pint' I've quite enjoyed it.
