500ml bottle served in a big snifter. Can't remember how this came into my possession. Date is 1/8, ABV is 5.0 -- both these numbers look hand written, and it's possible the beer's name is, too.

Pours golden amber with no head and little carbonation. Smell is tart, lemony, some funk, some wood.

Taste is interesting, and very nice. Lemon is certainly there, funk is subdued, wood is enhanced. Something else vaguely fruity in there, but not bright -- makes me think of dates, but it's not dates. Maybe just the slightest hint of raisin? That's a guess more than an observation.

Mouthfeel is light and smooth (but, too still). Overall...I want a little carbonation in this beer. That would make it look and feel better. It tastes and smells nice. I would drink it again. I'd recommend it to friends.

In their continued efforts to update the traditional sour ale, the Pretentious Barrel House pulls Cashmere hops for a special fruity zing and lactose with vanilla for a soft balance against its acidity. With this sweet and sour medley, the traditional spontaneous ales of Brussels ever saw this coming.

Pale gold and cast in a fine mesh haze, a frothy austere comes just ahead of a tangy, briny scent of dried citrus, tropical fruit and melon. A piquant spice tickles the nose with a background of dried and weathered oak offering an earthen set of complex perfumes. Early sweetness is brisk on the tongue, carrying the taste of taffy, sourdough and hard candy in a very brief introduction.

As the flavors develop a clean and spicy sourness, the middle palate quickly shakes free from sweetness while a briny layer of flavors add an earthy, peppery and cleanly lactic character. Its sourness takes the shape of lime, passionfruit, crabapple, gooseberry, grapefruit and kiwi particularly well while trending vinously tart like fine white wine. Hints of oak bring a slightly nutty taste to the late palate while the subtle smoothness of cream tempers the brazen acidity effortlessly.

Lightly bittered, a balsa-like finish is lightly powdery and helps to dry the beer's textures for utmost drinkability and refreshment without giving up depth, complexity or roundness. A brief afterglow of sourdough and cream of wheat return on the retro olfactory senses for extra measure.
