Screw-top growler filled at the Cataqua brewpub in Portsmouth, NH.

First imperial pint pours with a 1/4" light beige head, over the clear dark amber brew. Uneven head recedes rather quickly, with lots of sticky lasting lace. Aroma is lightly sweet, with a sedate earthy pine hops character. Taste stays the course, moderately malty upfront, earthy bitterness through the close. Mouthfeel is smooth, and drinkability is pretty good. Comes together pretty well, just looking for a bit more assertiveness in all areas, I guess.

Only needed one to snag a keeper with this one on 6/20/2007. 16-oz. pint in a shaker glass at the Cattaqua Public House.

Tremulous ¼-inch of alternating tight and loose foam with a nice lace. Light garnet to amber hue and placidly clear with some slow lane action going on. Freshly squeezed grapefruit nails the nose up front along with some allspice and a light aluminum tincture. Nice, flavorful hop balance on the tongue that won’t blow away a hop head, but more up front than the ubiquitous Long Hammer; as it warms, some grassy notes reveal themselves. Extremely sessionable ale.

One of the best Redhook offerings I’ve had since I quaffed Winterhooks on a December night in 2001 at the pub, Ecco’s “Invisible Cities” read in one sitting.
