Poured into a small pint glass. Pours a moderateley hazy, light to medium amber with a big, four finger white head with great retention and lacing. Aroma of grainy malt with some wheat notes, apple and vague citrus, grassy and lightly floral hops. Flavor is bready and lightly grainy malt, green apple, orange, grassy and floral hops with a burst of fruit esters. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. I rarely buy any lagers in this style, but I really like what Freigeist is doing with old and archaic styles brightened with more modern hops. This is another interesting one. Scored to style, this might be a miss, although it starts out right with a hybrid pilsner and helles profile and fairly grassy hops, although from the start that have a little more floral and citrus character than traditional. I really liked the small burst of green apple and citrus flavors in the finish, which were unusual for any lager, but worked well for my palate. I will get this one again, which was unexpected. My ratings are for overall enjoyment and interest, not to classical style.

 

It's definitely not a traditional Dortmunder.
Definitely "Americanized" as they say .
Still an enjoyable beer, but falls short for the style.

 

 

 

The pour is golden colored with a steady amount of carbonation bubbles. The taste is some grassy hops & barley. Cheers! B

Pint can - no date (kept cold) -poured into a pils stem at 38°F.

Fairly clear deep honey gold, lots of micro suspended particulate. Short head quickly recedes to thick collar.

Nose: Malty woth notes of fresh white bread, dough, light toast, dusty grain, touch of honey with some undertones of green apple skin, lemon zest, grass, mandarin, and floral elements of magnolia and summer garden blossoms.

Palate: Fairly firm malt presence woth bread crust, cracked grains, toast, and malted barley - bready, sweet, with honey and dough notes, and a quick insertion of hops, lending lots of grass, leafy hop cone, German spiciness, some floral bits, intermingled with a prominent resinous bitterness that may be bringing it down a touch. Finish dries out a bit, with some bready sweetness remaining - a bit too much, with that hop resin bitterness pairing enough to lend an odd herbal metallic flavour that I often find as a flaw in lagers.

Mouthfeel/Body: Given the nalt presence and digging hops, this translates more medium-bodied, with an underlying crispness overshadowed by bready malt and hop cling. Effervescence is fine, but not quite as aggressive as I'd like, allowing that finish to really linger on in a tacky manner.

Overall: This one just drinks more like an Enlgish Pub Ale than a true Dortmunder. It lacks the minerality and malt-to-hops balance it needs, and that true clean crispness that defines the style just isn't there beneath it's weight. Simply dialing back the hops would help tremendously. It's a perfectly drinkable full-bodied hoppy lager - not a maibock, but not quite the classic Dortmunder I was hoping for. I'll pass on this in the future.

A: The beer is slightly hazy yellow in color and has a light to moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a short white head that quickly died down, leaving a narrow collar of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of bready malts are present in the nose along with hints of grainy malts.
T: The taste has flavors of bready and doughy malts. Only a slight amount of bitterness is perceptible, but the underlying hops help in negating any malty sweetness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and clean on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This Dortmunder is nice and malty while being very easy to drink.

Pretty good. Unassuming, but noteworthy. I dig this style. It's a unique lager style. Wouldn't mistake it for a pilsner or a helles. Its own thing.

Clear, pale gold colored body; lively, fine carbonation; thick and frothy white head. Delicate, sweet aroma of crystal malt and gently toasted malts. Very light toasted grain flavor with a touch of honey; medium hop bitterness. Medium body; crisp with some delicate residual sugar notes; gently warm; lightly sticky on the palate; semi-dry mouthfeel overall.

This beer delivers some finely balanced, toasted malt and nicely bittered flavors. It has some body to it yet refrains from hammering you with a heavy finishing gravity. Well-rounded, malt-forward, and very nice...
