a sturdy and well built stout here, roasty and fuller bodied, bitter and almost smoked tasting, but just short of that. to me, it being as dry as it is makes it excellent dark beer for hot weather, not lingering sweetness at all, it keeps it on the edge of refreshing for the style, and it warms up well. dark roasted coffee grounds, faint english leaning yeast, and a beautiful malty roundness in the middle. its not overly complex and jazzed up, none of the beer in here is, but its traditional and well refined, one of the more honed recipes in this place really. i like the charry bitterness from the dark barley at the end, and the smoothness with which it goes down. i could see this being a really good base to make it a coffee beer with some good cold brew, or even receiving a quick barrel ageing really well, some nice spicy rye or something. the beers in here arent all that thrilling on paper, but most of them were pretty darn good in the glass, and thats really what its all about. a fine example of the style here.
