Pint can - dated 04/01/19 - poured into a wine stem at 44F
Consumed 4/16/19
Pours a very hazy - but not turbid - deep glowing orange hue, with a finger of ivory head that leaves a thick ring of lacing as it slowly recedes.
Nose: On the nose, this is the definition of a "juice bomb". Fresh squeezed orange juice, grapefruit juice, lemonade, ripe pineapple, passionfruit, mango, nectarines, and a hint of toasted brown rice. Tropical. Juicy. Acidic.
Palate: Assertive, juicy, and slightly bitter citrus lays down the foundation. There is a mild honey sweetness from the malt, but the heavy handed hopping counteracts it immediately with some resinous drying and bitterness. Orange creamsicle, mango sorbet, a hint of lime, tangy pineapple, lemon rind, and lots and lots of grapefruit pith make up the primary portfolio here. There's a fresh, green, grassy note, with some vegetal and herbaceous undertones. Some ripe nectarine shows up with more mango, before quickly peaking, and rushing towards a moderately bitter finish with green grass, grapefruit pith, and orange rind. Not a lot of earthiness, black pepper, or pine. Lots of citrus. Clean, dry, tannic, resinous finish with lingering citrus rind.
Mouthfeel/Body: The body is medium-full, with a round, soft feel. Slightly creamy, while retaining a whisper of crispness. A fairly low level of effervescence, with the bubbles being quite fine and sparse, with just a tiny bit of scratch on the very tip of the tongue. Soft, and juicy upfront, turning chalky dry in the finish, with a tiny bit of resinous cling.
Overall: Cushnoc hasn't been around for a long time. We're only just beginning to see what they're capable of. So far, they seem to have some talent for hoppy beer. I've enjoyed all the IPAs I've had from them. Over time, I'm sure they'll get things dialed in, and perhaps Maine will see a new big league brewer in the hoppy game. They're doing great right now, and this is a perfectly enjoyable citrus-forward New England IPA. Juicy, satisfying, flavourful, and even a bit refreshing. I'd be more than happy getting this again. It's not ground-breaking or monumental, but it's a darn good IPA, and that's all that matters.
