Outside Jokes is all about balance. The idea with this beer was to create a Pale Ale that bursted with hop flavour and aroma, complement it with a subtly smooth bitterness and finish it off with a lively, crisp finish. A generous amount of wheat lays a lemony base for this beer, but it's all about the hops. Luscious mango, bright citrus and some delicate grassy notes shine from the combination of Citra and Azacca. It's a well rounded representation of some of the most beautiful hops. A perfect everyday beer.

Pours a hazy, very light and pale yellow colour. Even with a rough pour, a thin 1 inch head appears and dissipated within a minute, but leaves a very healthy ring of thick lacing.
Aroma is upfront with the grapefruit notes. Strong white and ruby grapefruit smells with a bit of peel. A bit of orange in there too. Floral notes in the background with some pine needles
Taste follows the smell here, just a little bit more subtle. Grapefruits here of course, a bit zesty, some melon-y flavours. There is a good amount of wheaty malty flavours on the finish. The citrus hop bitterness is gentle at first and fades to a very unique sweetness after a while.
The mouthfeel is gentle, relatively juicy, doesn’t dry out the palate, and the carbonation is lower than typical, making it a fairly easy drink. Pretty light bodied
Overall, a really unique pale ale. It’s great for what it is and if you like those subtle yet complex grapefruit flavours, you will absolutely find it here. There is definitely a mixing of styles between an APA and an IPA here in the general taste profiles. If you want a strong example of either, I wouldn’t go for this beer but if you enjoy either or both and are up for the mish mashing of flavours, you’ll enjoy this! Overall, I thought it was complex and easy drinking enough that I would absolutely get this again if I was at the store and unsure of what to get.

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Aug 5 2021 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy pale straw yellow colour, briefly topped with a quarter-inch of bubbly, sudsy white head; it melts off within a minute or two, replaced with a soapy collar and a thin ring of lacing. Grapefruit pithiness on the nose, with lesser suggestions of pineapple, pine needles, melon, floral hops and grainy wheat.
Not bad for a New England pale ale - the flavour profile is similar to the nose, but adds more melon and some passion fruit/mango, while dialing back the grapefruit somewhat. Hints of grainy, doughy pale malts and wheaty sweetness as well, with lots of pithiness on the back end - I didn't perceive it as especially bitter, but the malt presence isn't really robust enough to counter what *is* there. Light in body, with moderately low carbonation that gently agitates the palate; feels smooth and soft on the tongue. Above average drinkability, assuming you enjoy hazy pale ales in the first place.
Final Grade: 3.74, an acceptable B grade. Outside Jokes is a decent pale ale that I have no strong objections to, and served as a generally positive introduction to Town Brewery's products. It's good for what it is, with appealing citrus/tropical fruit flavours... my issue is that 'what it is' is not really what I want out of this style in the first place. I'd take an old fashioned APA (with a malt bill that matches up to its hops), over this watered-down NEIPA-type stuff any day of the week. But as always, give'r a go and decide for yourself.

A pair of 473 ml cans poured into a giant Hofbrauhaus mug (from Germany). Thanks for the birthday gift from Kif and Alex.
Canning date for both is December 22, 2020.
Appearance - Pours a hazy pale golden, yellowy orange colored brew and topped with three impressive fingers of head. Excellent staying power.
Smell - Light and tropical with notes of pineapple with some orange and pine notes. Some floral and herbal aspect as well.
Taste - Light and semi-bitter with tastes of pine and to a lesser extent orange. Some grassiness and lemons mixed in.
Mouthfeel - Medium-light bodied, crisp but moderate carbonation and semi-juicy finish. Easy to drink.
Overall - A tasty little tipple of a pale ale, Outside Jokes is no joke, and one of the better in the style in the local market. The delicate but acutely pine quality of this brew is kind of unique and makes it a beer worth repeating.

Not quite what I was expecting for an APA, more along the lines of an IPA to my mind. Pours opaque, like a pale glass of orange juice. Nose is fruity and pithy, oranges. More aggressively Holly and pithy than expected. Bitter finish. Kinda rough in character, but drinkable.

473ml can poured into a shaker pint glass.
This pours a lemony gold, cloudy with an active white head that's tight and lingers for a bit. Lacing is quite good as well.
Fresh and bright notes of pine, herb and lemongrass dominate the nose, but don't overpower. Sipping it confirms the pine, but after a bright lemon-drop moment of citrus. There's a good amount of acidity to underpin the lemon, liven things up on the tongue and get the saliva going without veering into pucker territory. The finish is medium, fairly clean, with a pleasant, earthy bitterness that lingers after the sip is gone. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and pleasant, much of that owing to the brightness leant by the tingly carbonation.
I've had several pale ales with similar flavour profiles, but I was surprised by the acidity and carbonation of this beer, which made this stand out a bit in the crowd. Well crafted, I will definitely be having this again.

Unexpectedly, it pours a hazy, grapefruit juice colour. Smells is bitter and a bit fruity. The taste is quite bitter, hoppy, and tropical, more along the lines of an IPA rather than an APA.
