473 mL can from the Toronto Brewing 2021 advent calendar; dated Nov 11 2021 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a hazy pale yellow colour, stirring up roughly one finger of loose, soapy white head that collapses within a minute or two. Its remnants include a thin collar and some filmy wisps on the surface, with minimal lace deposition. Not what I'd call a looker, but it smells pretty darn nice - I'm getting strawberry, grapefruit, honeydew melon and passion fruit, with hints of bubble gum, lime, grape juice and just a touch of wheaty grains.
This is a fine little pale ale, and surprisingly flavourful for such a light beer - notes of apricot, melon and grapefruit pulp, with hints of passion fruit and strawberry. Finishes with pithy citrus and dank hops, with suggestions of tropical/stone fruit lingering into the aftertaste before it dries off. Light in body, with assertive carbonation that feels prickly and crisp on the tongue; its body is smooth and relatively generous for 4%. Easily crushable, and not at all tiresome to do so.
Final Grade: 3.99, a very respectable B+. Town Brewery's Coast Pale Ale is far better than most light beers, I think we can all agree on that - I'd also take this over the vast majority of 'session IPAs', which this easily could have been marketed as. It's hop-forward and dominated by fruity flavours, but without much in the way of bitterness or significant malt presence - that last point being the source of my only real gripe, as some more malts might have made this a more three-dimensional experience (vs. one or two dimensions, tops). Still, it's quite good and well worth a look if you're in the market for something light and hoppy.
