Sour IPA

Hopped with the choicest Mosaic and Hallertau Blanc, Fine Art is brimming with notes of pink guava, grapefruit, white grape juice and orange zest. It's smooth, sour, fruity and refreshing. Enjoy!

Tallboy can from the Toronto Brewing 2021 advent calendar; dated Oct 21 2021 and served slightly chilled. Reviewed from notes.

Pours a cloudy, translucent lemondrop yellow colour, producing more than two fingers of billowing, foamy white head that gradually dissipates. Five minutes later, I'm left with a frothy collar and a stringy coat of lace - looks quite nice in the glass. The nose is a little funky - I'm assuming this is lacto-soured based purely on what I'm sensing. Unventilated gym bag, lemon and earthy, floral hops, accented by hints of grapefruit, lemongrass and just a touch of grape.

Quite tart at the forefront - lemon, lactic acidity and a little bit of gym bag funkiness, with wheaty pale malt, orange and guava flavours also coming through. Citrus and tropical fruits carry on through the finish, which also features some grassy, floral hops and a hint of earthy bitterness; more lactic acidity and moderate funk lasting into the aftertaste. Medium-light in body, with aggressive carbonation that gives a firm, crisp bite to this brew's mouthfeel - prickly and tongue-scrubbing. I didn't find this especially drinkable, but one can is doable.

Final Grade: 3.68, a B grade. Sour IPAs have never really 'clicked' with me, which may have something to do with why I didn't drink Fine Art until a few months after I took it out of the advent calendar. I really liked its hop profile, but the lactic acidity is quite sharp, and the funkiness doesn't work very well IMO, to the point that it distracts from the (more appealing) hop notes. A little overcarbonated, too. I'll make a point of drinking this fresh if I get another chance, and if you enjoy sour IPAs then it's surely worth a spin.
