Sampling a cellar temp 22 oz bottle poured into my .5L mug. Picked up at the brewery 2 days ago.
The beer pours a beautiful clear rich mahogany color with some ruby highlights when I hold up my glass. A spongey khaki colored head of 2.5 cm foams up and fades to a sturdy edge layer after the pour. Some scattered lattice after each sip.
Aroma on this beer is clean and malt driven. I get some caramel and toffee with a little brown sugar, maybe a little red grape. Nose is clean and mild, not really any hop presence.
First sip reveals a medium body with fine tingly carbonation that fizzes up when I swirl the beer in my mouth. Texture is light and crisp, beer drinks very easy. A slight sticky feel on my palate after each swallow.
Flavor is all malt too, here toffee and brown sugar with some red grape and a bit of toasted grain note. I also get a bit of balancing grassy hop that lingers with a bit of bite on each swallow. The finish also dries out my palate, encouraging me to take another sip.
No hint of ABV anywhere, not really much oak character that I pull out, but maybe others would find it. This is a pretty solid dopplebock and Im glad to have tried it. Ill see what happens with the second bottle in about 6 months or a year.
