one of the weirdest beers ive had this year so far, or in many years, or maybe ever, its bizarre. an imperial version of a beer called chips and dip that they did with tox, who also rules, that is a gose at its core but is done with actual tortilla chips, lime, mango, chili, and salt. this edition is made stronger and aged one year in tequila barrels, also a tox collaboration. it sounds gross on paper, and im not sure it isnt, but its also really good, challenging yes, but a ton of fun, and somehow not really drinking like a gimmick beer, better than novelty, despite my expectations. the pour is unimpressive, or rather unassuming, a little orange color to it, some haze, a fast fading short white head, and some apparent viscosity too. i think they do it with a tajin rim too, but i didnt get that. the nose on it is crazy, salty like a bag of chips, like i get the corn flour in it, and i taste it too, definitely never seen tortilla chips in a beer before, not even in that one mikkeller did with chipotle peppers and black beans and avocado and all that! the mango is sweet and kind of generic fruity to me in aroma and especially in flavor, unneeded and the one element of this that i think they could have left out. the stronger grain profile adds sweetness too, and the acidic lime cuts it nicely, but the mango is superfluous to me. the lime is zesty and real and well dosed to my senses, the lead flavor, definite margarita vibes with the strong salt in here, nice minerality from it, this is salty and strong, its boozy because of the bold tequila aspect which obvious adds to the margarita appeal, the chips fit in well here too. its woody and kind of heavy, but the tequila aspect is undeniable. its also quite spicy, green jalapeno character to me, i dont taste it until i swallow it, some throat heat but not quite burn, and it doesnt linger too long. its fresh and works with the other elements really well, chili beer yeah but definitely original in how its married in. salty, not too sour but clean there, weighty feeling through and less carbonated than it cold be, or rather the bubbles dont hold well, but its really cool beer overall, fits the theme beautifully, brings the tequila in well, and on the whole is like nothing i have ever had. need to try the original chips and dip next time too. wow! a head shaker in a good way...
