Appearance: Poured with a finger of head that did not stick around and thus lace was kept to a minimal. The body is a deep brown, that is just solid enough in color that you can't key in on carbonation in the body, but only just. You can make out just the barest silhouette of your hand on the other side.
Smell: Mild toffee malt with a hint of walnut nuttiness, but that's about it. Even after quite a bit of warming, not a lot seems to want to come out on this one. Certainly nothing bad or awkward, but needs more potency.
Taste: Mild toffee malt to start that gives way to walnuts and a hint of plum and an interesting mix of balanced sandy and floral hops and maybe a hint of leathery bret.
Mouthfeel: Carbonation is a bit on the fizzy side, less the creamier side and seems to really make it's push right before the hops round things out. The aftertaste is a little bit dry with the nuts, leather and hops holding court here. Transitions well, albeit a short, smooth ride.
Drinkability: Medium bodied, and settles down well and while the most refreshing things around, it's plenty interesting. It uses that dry note to keep you drinking. That said, I really thought this beer would change a bit more as it warmed, but that never happened.
Final Thoughts: I think this would go great with Fish and Chips for some reason. It's just potent enough to cut through the grease but wouldn't over power anything. A solid brew, albeit one without much in the way of scent.
