On tap at brewery:
Don’t see many black IPAs any more, so interested to see this as a flagship and decently rated. First few sips have me thinking it’s definitely as I remember the bygone style.

Black hole dark, with a not-quite creamy tan head that took a couple top-offs to contain. That has actually laced the plastic glass slightly.

Nose has a floral hop note with a rich burnt toast reminiscent roasted malt. It’s near a peat-like forest floor with a bit of wildflowers.

Taste starts smooth and stout-like with a deep bitter chocolate (unsweetened), but then the veil is lifted and the citrus pith, pine woodsy hops jump out to play. The citrus aspect only gets to an even keel with the charring bitterness of the grain, and only as it warms. The smooth opening is disrupted by a moderate carbonation fairly quickly, and the hop notes lighten the body to medium at best.

Perhaps just because it’s been a while, but I enjoyed this experience. It definitely wasn’t a weak attempt at the style.

On draft at the brewery, in a 12 oz plastic cup

Black in color, foamy tan head. Nice aroma of mild roast malt and earthy dank hops. Nice and bitter. Medium bodied.
