The next in our playground series of Double IPAs, Lava features pineapple-forward Idaho 7, and mixed berry-like Mosaic hops. We achieved a new level of softness and creaminess in this beer, still with a huge aroma and flavor of tropical fruit and berries. We make up the rules to our DIPAs as we go, a lot like the “ground is lava” game we used to play as kids.

This beer won Gold at the Virginia Brewers Cup awards, in 2018!

A: Pours a milky murky pale to medium golden honey in color with moderate amounts of fine active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass and moderate pale yellow + bright yellow + pale orange + burnt orange + peach + apricot colored highlights. The beer has a three finger tall a dense thick creamy foamy off-white head that slowly reduces to a medium to large sized patch of thick film covering a little more than 50% of the surface of the beer surrounded by a large patch of very thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of juicy tropical/pineapple + citrus/grapefruit + berry + tropical/papaya hops over the top of light to moderate aromas of pale + biscuit + honey + oat malts with a moderate amount of honey-like sweetness.

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate flavor of pale + biscuit + honey + oat malts with a moderate amount of honey-like sweetness. That is followed by moderate to strong flavors of juicy tropical/pineapple + citrus/grapefruit + berry + tropical/papaya hops which impart a light amount of bitterness which fades away quickly leaving a moderate lingering tropical hop flavor.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly heavier than moderate amounts of creamy soft/fluffiness mid-body and a light amount of dryness in the finish. Light amounts of alcohol warming and hop burn in the finish.

O: Drinks pretty easily considering the strength though you can detect a bit of alcohol and a light amount of hop greenness/burn in an otherwise wonderfully creamy soft/fluffy mouthfeel. Really enjoyable tropical hop flavors and aromas with a lighter presence of berry hops.

Can to tulip.
The appearance was a clean murky opaque orange woody color with a semi-thick level white foamy head. This left delicately to let some semi-messy foamy lace surround my glass.
The aroma had some grassy sweet to semi-pineapple sweet juicy tones, sweet mango/papaya notes. Further underneath are some berry sweet tones.
The flavor leaned slightly towards the sweet side but encapsulating certain berry fruity semi-bitter tones. Light berry aftertaste with some grassiness.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with some creamy effects smoothing out some of the bitterness from the Mosaic hops. Mostly a sipper due to some dryness and a touch of bitter harshness. Finishes semi-clean with some soothing grassiness.
Overall, I'd say a very nicely done New England styled DIPA well worthy of coming back to.

I'd like it more if I didn't hate Idaho 7
