473 mL can from the LCBO; dated May 23 2024, listed at 6.2% and served barely chilled. South Channel was originally marketed as a "hazy pale ale", but its current label opts for the term "hazy IPA".
Pours hazy golden-orange, supporting nearly two fingers of fluffy, foamy white head that lasts for five minutes or so. A bumpy cap and frothy collar of suds live on, with a respectable smattering of spotty lace scattered around the glass. The aroma is fruity and citrusy, but not very distinct beyond that.
Decent, straightforward flavour profile without much nuance or detail. Wheaty, bready pale malt sweetness supports hop flavours of orange, grapefruit and lemon, with a hint of indeterminate berries. Finishes pithy, with just a touch of tropical fruit - mango, maybe - concluding with citrus dissipating into the aftertaste. Medium-full bodied, with average carbonation that gives some crispness to this brew's smooth mouthfeel. Quite drinkable for 6.2%, but not really interesting enough to be worth a followup serving.
Final Grade: 3.73, a B grade. Trestle's South Channel is an understated and inoffensive IPA; not particularly bitter, but calling it "juicy" would not be entirely appropriate, either. It's a fresh can, too - or at least, as fresh as one could reasonably expect from the LCBO - so I think it's fair to say that this is as good as it'll get. A serviceable, competently-brewed pale ale at best. Not something I'd go out of my way for... I'd probably take their 30,000 Islands IPA over this one, but South Channel is at least worth a try.
