473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Aug 15 2023 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a hazy, translucent pale golden colour, capped off with nearly two fingers of puffy, foamy white head. Great retention - it lasts for more than five minutes, gradually whittled down to a creamy collar and frothy cap; an attractive ring of webbed lace is also left behind. The aroma is wheaty and understated, with notes of lemongrass, Belgian yeast spiciness, citrus peel and just a whiff of white grape - maybe a little more 'wit' than 'IPA'.
The flavours follow the nose: there's a backbone of wheaty, crackery pale malt sweetness, partnered with notes of citrus peel, dry white wine and stone fruit. Hints of peppery clove spice and yeastiness on the back end, concluding with a flash of grassy, herbal hops and mild fruitiness that fades into a relatively dry aftertaste. Medium in body, with low carbonation that weakly rustles the surface of the palate; the mouthfeel is smooth and generally pleasing, but it's a little thin for 6.5%.
Final Grade: 3.64, a B grade. White IPAs have never been a big draw for this beer geek, but I do think Trestle's Boneyard Bay is a serviceable rendition of this substyle. I've had better, but there's nothing about this one that I found especially off-putting - the Hallertau Blanc flavours are appealing enough, pairing well with the spicy, yeasty aspects of the Belgian yeast. My only real gripe is that it's not a very well-balanced hybrid, in that that witbier-esque features tend to out-compete the hops. It's worth a spin if you enjoy white ales.
