mperial Stout Brewed with Maple Syrup and with Coffee Added
Nothing says diner breakfast like the mingled aromas of maple syrup and freshly-roasted coffee. We bourbon-barrel-aged 25 gallons of dark maple syrup before adding it to make this massive Imperial Stout even more massive. The recipe has less roast and bitterness to leave room for the coffee from Vigilante Coffee Co. (Hyattsville, MD)! The maple adds woodsy-vanilla-caramel notes that dance around the warming baked good aromatics of the coffee.

16 ounce can poured into a Spiegelau wheat beer glass.
L: Thick dark brown pour with a thin ruddy brown head. The foam lasts less than 30 seconds but coats the glass like thin oil.
S: Robust nose consisting of roasted malt and coffee with sticky sweet indicating caramel and molasses aromas cut with sharper notes of vanilla. Some alcohol comes with deeper whiffs.
T: The flavor, much as the nose, is robust.Big roasty flavor with sweet molasses and caramel and hints of vanilla. Moderate woody and charred bitterness clean up the sweetness before the finish while still allowing a malty sweet aftertaste.
F: Full bodied creamy and viscous with medium carbonation giving some edge to the overall smooth feel.
O: Large flavor, low alcohol character, dangerously drinkable, great, though fairly sweet, Imperial stout.

Notes. Had at Controlled Chaos festival @ Burly Oak / Nov 2022
Excellent pour of a Vintage multi year BAIS.
Rich and decadent imperial coffee stout with well integrated maple. Reminded me a bit of the original CBS on tap at Founders many years ago.
Mastercrafted.
Sapwood is new to me, and I’m quickly becoming a fan. I enjoyed both styles of their beer today and was impressed discussing brews with their team at festival.

Received courtesy of @Haze. Canned 6/8/21.
Pour is dark, reddish brown that settles into a very deep brown once in the glass. Medium amount of tan head with decent retention. Eventually receded to a thin cap & ring. I'm curious to see how the mouthfeel is on this beer, as it looked thin (which is not a description I often use for appearance)
Aroma is straight coffee with maple syrup. Based on the brewers notes on the can, this beer was made with less roast, so I won't ding it for the lack of the typical aromas I'd expect to detect. I will say, it smells quite good.
The taste very much follows the nose. I've never had a cup of coffee in my life so I'm far from an expert, but this is very coffee forward. I was a bit worried that the 25 gallons of maple syrup used in the making of this beer would overwhelm, but I find that it adds a nice complementary sweetness to the coffee notes. Very little in the way of traditional stout flavors, but again, that appears to have largely been the brewer's intent.
Feel is not as thin as I thought it would be, it's more medium bodied than anything. Alcohol is extremely well hidden. If tasting blind, I would have guessed this was in the 6-7% range, not 12.4%.
Overall, a very tasty breakfast beer.
