Tomatoes aren't native to Italy. Chile peppers don't originally come from India. Maris Otter isn't a German barley... sometimes ingredients and techniques from unexpected places are required to create the flavor we are looking for! This dark lager has a wonderful bready flavor thanks to the blend of German and English base malts, along with the espresso-like char of German roasted barley. Lagered cold for a clean background that lets the grain shine!

16 ounce can poured into a dimpled mug.
Canned 11/30/22
Pours clear dark brown and looks black in the glass. The mug is topped with two fingers of thick tan foam which leaves a thin sheet of lace as it eventually settles to a creamy foam cap.
The nose is moderate strength and full of bread crust and toasted malt aroma with light whiffs of spicy hop. Flavor is malt forward with a nice balance of sweet to bitter roast keeping from being acrid. There is some noble hop flavor but a number of malty flavors, toast, bread crust, roast, coffee and cream and caramel all come forward. The medium-light body is smooth and soft with moderate carbonation adding a small finishing bite. Very clean overall.
This is one of the best Schwarzbiers I've ever had. Just enough malty sweetness to keep it from being acrid without being overly sweet. Very enjoyable, leaves you wanting a second pint.
