British winter ale. Blend of Golden Promise and Maris Otter pale ale malts; then added English Caramel malts. Layering on toffee, plum and slight chocolate notes. Finished with whirlpool-hopped exclusively with orange-tinged East Kent Goldings from England.

16 ounce can poured into a Spiegelau wheat beer glass.
CANNED ON 1/24/24

L: Slightly hazy amber-brown, one inch khaki head, moderately persistent foam is slick but leaves symmetrical spots of lace.
S: Nose opens with caramel, toffee, and doughy bread malt aromas, nutty aromas follow.
T: Malt forward and sweet, big nutty, caramel toffee and bread crust flavors, hints of British Ale yeast-like fruity esters, just enough woody and earthy hop character to balance and dry it out on the back.
M: Body is to the light side of medium and very smooth with a touch of crispness about the edges.
O: Great Amber Ale with nice English character.

Sapwood’s excellent take on a rich English Brown Ale in a Winter Warmer style. Ratings reflect comparison to other Winter Warmers. Related, I’ve had dozens of these brews both here and in a number of English pubs. One of my favorite styles from back in the day (70’s). So I’m always a bit suspect of American attempts.
To start…Head was a bit weak and nose a bit faint, but very forgivable.
Otherwise this was a “spot on” Brit ale true to the desired style. Gorgeous /perfect clear and deep chestnut brown/ red color. Perfect caramel, toffee , dark fruit biscuit flavor. I would never think this wasn’t a British import. And a very good Brit ale. Samuel Smith Winter; Ridgeway Warm Welcome; Hook Norton come to mind. Body is light and fresh, yet has a slightly full silkiness. Possibly best Brit style American brew I’ve had. Kudos!
