A bottle-conditioned beer purchased at the RAIB (Real-Ale-in-Bottles) stall, GBBF 06. BB JUL 2007, served cool in a straight imperial-pint glass.
A: slightly murky copperish hue, with a restrained white fluffy head and a very low carbonated body. Quite static.
S: sour star-fruits, oxidised pears, prunes... almost vinegary-strength of sourness upfront... intertwined with a much milder note of caramel malts and a faint touch of nutmeg-like spice... the overall aroma is very much like Spinning Dog's Top Dog that I tasted just two hours ago...!! (I'm sure I'm not day-dreaming.) The sour yeasty edge is semi-overpowering and making the nose overly simplistic and flat.
T: astringently-acidic, rough and bitter yeasty flavour overwhelms the palate along with sour-sweet fruity maltiness that is much milder in intensity... fortunately the bitter and dryish hops catch up pretty fast, resulting in a roast tea-leaves like and slightly piney bitter palate of hops in the med-length finish, outperforming the unimpressive fore-taste by a huge margin and salvaging the whole drink as such. As it warms, the dryish edge of bitter hops tunes up bit by bit, rendering a more pleasant taste of a Premium Bitter.
M&D: the carbonation remains soft and the overall body is medium, not imposing nor thin, but the flavour itself suffers a lot from the failed bottle-conditioning and rendered off-balance, thus not a tasty nor an enjoyable beer by any means. Maybe its cask-conditioned version could change my opinion, if I get a chance to see it at pubs/beer-fests in the near future.
