A 330ml bottle with a BB of July 2014. Picked up a while back from Trembling Madness in York. Described on the label as a cloudy wheat beer with added mango juice.
Poured into a tulip. Bottle conditioned, and a bit of a gusher. A hazy golden-amber hue with plentiful fine sediment and intense carbonation. Produces a vast head of creamy white foam with good retention; this slowly reduces to a thick surface layer. Aroma of mango and fruity yeast, with hints of mild banana, earthiness, subtle clove/spice and faint stewed leaves. Quite sweet, but pleasant enough.
Tastes of mangos with a yeasty character and a dry finish. Notes of mango, earthiness, harsh stewed leaves, mild banana, subtle yeast esters and faint dry spice. A touch of cardboard in the background and a slight metallic twang. Highly attenuated, followed by a delicate yeastiness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with effervescent carbonation and a somewhat insubstantial body. Lightly astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of harsh stewed leaves, dry yeast and sweet mango notes.
It's alright but a shade superficial - a good hefe has more depth of character. Looks spot on, while the aroma and flavour are pleasingly fruity but spoiled by some harsh off-notes. Body is OK yet fizzy. Satisfying enough for summer. Worth trying if you stumble across it.
