8oz glass at Beer Revolution YEG Oliver Square - kind of a weak sauce (wowee sauce-wise, at least) effort for an anniversary brew, IMHO.
This beer appears a slightly hazy, pale golden yellow colour, with one skinny finger of wispy and bubbly off-white head, which leaves some decent boiling cauldron profile lace around the glass as things slowly sink away.
It smells of gritty and grainy cereal malt, some earthy yeastiness, clove and black peppercorn spice, and very tame leafy, musty, and dead floral hop bitters. The taste is grainy and crackery pale malt, a lesser edgy wheatiness, muddled earthy spice, a hint of ripe pome fruit, and more understated earthy, musty, and herbal green hoppiness.
The carbonation is fairly mild in its bored-seeming frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and mostly smooth, with just a touch of spiciness perhaps taking a notch or so out of the ideal here. It finishes trending dry, the malt faltering a bit in the face of the lingering spice.
Overall - this is a well-made version of the style, which one might dub a 'session' Saison. Full of flavour, and a good sign of things to come in their second year of operations. Worth imbibing in, especially if you're the DD, or the like.
