Have you met our beloved hefeweizen, Hugh Hefe's alter-ego ... Dunkel Hugh? Our weizen yeast strain provide hints of banana and clove much like Hugh Hefe. The use of Munich Malts lends roasty and savory flavors with a touch of milk chocolate. Malted wheats provide a creamy texture that caresses the palate, creating a beer that is as velvety smooth as it is flavorful.

Pours a deep amber. Thick foam. No aroma. Not a lot of taste either. Some very light fruity malt flavor but it's barely there. Very peculiar. This is not my favorite dunkel.

Flat-out average. (And I define average beer ratings as 3.25. But I also rarely give a rating below that median, no matter how bad that beer. After all, we BA-ers "Respect Beer" and we do that because every brew is a lesson and, with corrections, should have a future.
That said, Dunkel Hugh is as superficial as its presumed namesake of Hugh Hefner and the Playboy lifestyle. The Dunkelweizen is a delicate brew and, when done well, is one of Bavaria's best examples of yeast really working grain into fruit. Hugh seems concocted without knowing what the style really is. In the interest of civility, I'm not going to tell you what I really think about Hugh.
As for my micro-review, Beer Tree is easier to say nice things about. For context, their successes have not been in Bavarian styles; so I probably should not have expected much of Hugh. However to explain my high Overall Hugs, it is because Beer Tree has done quite well for a six year in integrating brewing into the kitchen. It has two gastropubs (Farm and Factory) with interesting menus that are probably worth more than one attempt at trying. In addition to this contribution to the farm-to-table movement, they have an association with a chef and noted restaurant attempting to revitalize downtown Binghamton. Bringing that culinary intersection to hard-scrabble southern New York State deserves great OA Hugs.

16oz can.
L: Opaque, chestnut colour with two fingers of short-lived head.
S: A touch of phenols but not strong or long-lasting.
T: Hershey’s chocolate and a touch of clove. Low bitterness.
F: Surprisingly light, almost thin body saved by foaming carbonation and a dry-ish finish.
O: Underwhelming.

Canned 11/22/23. Part of the clear-the-cooler sale . @ $8/pk, what can go wrong? ; )
Slightly hazy , iced-tea-brown, with one finger of coarse, light tan head.
Smell is lightly nutty, with the typical banana+bubble gum-ish elements. Some biscuity malt aroma.
Taste is mostly a light woody /nutty flavor, with slight fruity, sourdough-ish tang towards finish. Barely-there bitterness at the end. Slight lingering spiciness.
Feel is smooth, with moderate, lighty-creamy carbonation tingle. Slight sourdough-like tang at the end. Drying sensatiion in the aftertaste.
Overall, not bad, but i do much prefer their usual hefe, "Hugh Hefe". Good enough that I would try it again, preferably fresher, perhaps on a warm summer day, rather than on this snowy late winter day.
