Appearance: Poured with next to no head, as I would expect from a Scotch ale, the body is brown when rested but deep red when light struck revealing and ample amount of incredibly thin carbonation.
Smell: The potency on this one isn't wear in needs to be as I do catch oak, plum, and whisky on this one, a nice diversity of notes, but it just isn't strong enough even after being allowed to warm up.
Taste: This is where the beer really shines as it starts with that plum, toffee malt and then hands it over to mild whisky, oak, pear that crescendos with the barest touch of earth with floral notes.
Mouthfeel: The aftertaste is pretty much absent, save for the mildest of toffee, plum and earth. The carbonation is briefly too fizzy initially but quickly calms down there where I would expect a Scotch ale to be. Transitioning is decent.
Drinkbility: I would call this medium-heavy leaning towards medium in terms of the body of the beer. Just a little bit too light for Scotch Ale, but not ridiculously so. I like that it hides it's ABV well, and because of the lighter body and lack of aftertaste it's a bit more approachable then most Scotch ales which kind of drill you. That said, it's kind nearing the edge of being a bit too light.
Final Thoughts: A great offering, and a bit of a lighter spin on the style. About half of the Howler this beer came in ended up being paired with some Mango Haberno wings. They worked surprisingly well together. That said, rest assured though, second half of that Howler is where this review comes from, having given my palate several hours of time to recover.
