Superbia Saison is crystal clear and golden amber in color, like wheat on a summer day. The head is rocky, bone white, and lasting.

Superbia smells at first of cloves, peppercorn, and Belgian funk. Soda crackers lend structural support, giving the clove and funk somewhere to build from. Soda crackers give way to the musky, dusty scent of grandma's attic. This is where I get notes of honey giving Superbia's aroma a brief, vaguely vinous aroma. In the finish I find the leafy, fresh cut grass aroma of European hops.

On the tongue, Superbia is crisp and funky in that wonderfully Belgian way. Again up front cloves, lead into aromas of peppercorn and an overall dusty sort of funkiness. In the center where I get the dusty, woody funkiness of grandma's attic, I also get that gentle hint of honey, adding just enough sweetness to balance the otherwise funky notes.

This is a great example of a saison. It's spicy, funky, kinda dusty and gently sweet in the center all at the same time. If you want to know what a good saison tastes like, Superbia Saison would be a great one to compare against.

Very hazy yellow-orange. Lots of very fine bubbles rising to supply the head from below. Poured a thick fluffy head that had almost as much volume as the beer itself. The head hardly reduced in size after several minutes, but left a bit of lacing on the side of the glass where and when it did reduce.

The head has a bitter, sour, funky mix of scents. There is no exposed liquid after several minutes. Well within typical profile for a saison. Near the bottom of the glass the head was thinning out, so swirling the glass kicked up some light citrus scents.

The flavors are a blend of funk, light malts, medium hoppy bitters, a touch of tart acid. It is also surprisingly (but not too) sweet. The aftertaste is mostly the hoppy bitters.

Very soft feel with tiny bubbles. It feels like most of the carbonation came out of solution and went to work keeping that amazing head going until almost the bottom of the glass. More like a sparkling wine than a beer feel.

This was on sale for a couple of bucks off at the local provincial liquor store. It seemed to be ignored and wanted some love, so I picked up a 6-pack. The only negative is that the bitters linger a bit too long in the aftertaste and build up after a while. There is quite a bit of sediment in the bottle, so be careful with the first 80% pour, swirl the bottle, and pour off the end into a second, smaller glass to get a taste of a much fruitier beer. Or you can mix it all up in the original glass. And there is no barnyard, unlike many of the current batch of beers from the province next door.
