i thought this was incredible, its a black currant graff, which is a beer and cider hybrid that has both apples and grains in it, so it makes sense that this is a collaboration with a cidery. its a super unique drink, still somewhat beery to me which is cool given all the fruit, deep purple in color, not a huge head on it, but an almost beet purple hue from the currants, and lots of them! there is a sweet and tart whole apple aroma, with the tang of the skins and the sweet juicy flesh, a white wine note to the fermentation profile with the apples, but i also get some malt, not just a light beer with cider blended in, but what i believe to be a joint fermentation, really cool idea. the currants are robust to say the least, natural and piquant and great, but i am curious enough about this thing and really graff as a style that i think i would have liked to taste it without this extra fruit layer, tasty as it is. the apple element is fermented down pretty dry, some ale yeast evident with that, but it also has some winey esters in the mix and even a little funk, not wild i dont think, but its an interesting profile just the same. its got a cool sweet and sour element like a candy, the currant is strong through the finish, and the body remains light. one of the more interesting beers ive had in some time, wasnt real familiar with a graff before, but not my intrigue is fully engaged. anyone know about a cool graff available stateside?
