Received from @r0rschach post NBS BIF 10 – Thanks John! Reviewed 2/19/20.
Undated 16 oz can. Stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 45 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 3.
First pour – Light yellow, slight haze.
Body – Light dirty yellow, hazy and opaque. When held to direct light, bright yellow but still opaque.
Head – Large (Maximum six cm, aggressive center pour), off-white, low density, average retention diminishing to an irregular three to fifteen mm stalactite-rimmed crown and a complete cap of varying thickness. Many small irregular islands of foam cover the inside of the glass.
Lacing – Fair. Broken, irregular rings of tiny to medium bubbles. See also above.
Aroma – 3 – Spicy and sweaty, with a bit of generic berry. Initially very strong, but slowly weakens.
Flavor – 4 – Begins moderately bitter with a weak generic citrus flavor. Surprisingly, with both chinook and amarillo hops, both pine and grapefruit flavors border on the imaginary, at least until the first belch. No alcohol (6.8 % ABV as marked on the label) flavor or aroma. No diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3 – Medium, watery, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.75 (Minus 0.25 point for an undated can). This is a good IPA, whether you call it an “American IPA” as does BA or a “New England Style IPA” as does the brewery. Whatever you call it, expect a tasty, moderately bitter, IPA, distinctly different from an English IPA.
