16-ounce can purchased at ABV Public House in Hillsboro, OR. Date stamp reads "CANNED ON 01/30/25". Served in a nonic half-pint glass.
Look:
Deep gold color with lemon yellow highlights. The head is tall and rocky, with excellent retention that lasts halfway down this half-pint glass. Nice intricate lacing too.
Smell:
Ripe mango, sweet malt, and alcohol. Notes of pine and weed. As the beer warms, a slight earthy note wafts up, along with a touch of sawdust and a more savory malt character.
Taste:
Sweet malt and orange oil, followed by a good gust of pine resin. There's also mango and black pepper, with an undertow of alcohol tying everything together. The finish is toasted sourdough bread with marmalade, and there's a breath of oregano in the long aftertaste. There are plenty of hops in here, but they take second billing behind the sweet malt and big alcohol, and end up seeming muted in comparison.
Feel:
Medium-bodied with light carbonation that works with the alcohol burn to leave the mouth tingling and ultimately numb.
Overall:
To me, a triple IPA is all about the hops. I like a lighter body and a dry finish with a huge bite from the hops. Spoils of War gets its bite from alcohol and sweetness. There is no question that this triple IPA is clean and well assembled, and that Grains of Wrath has a deep portfolio of awesome hoppy beers. But this triple IPA doesn't have the particular bite I'm looking for.

This beer pours a medium golden amber, with a small head. This was one of my favorite beers from this visit. It has a nice sweetness to it and some tropical fruit in the mix. It has some alcohol taste to it, but very minor. Does not taste like a 10.5 ABV. Rated 2-23-2024

16oz can served in a big snifter. Dated 03/04/21. Bought it at Market of Choice in Bend, OR two weeks ago.
Pours a clear golden amber with a medium sized head. Smell is fresh and hoppy, powerful resin radiating out as soon as I poured it. A little closer, I get booze and honey, maybe a little floral.
Taste is more dominated by the booze. Maybe that'll lighten up as it warms. Lemon, lemon pith, zest bitterness.
Mouthfeel is medium, tending toward thick, a little chewy. Overall, it's pretty good, but the dominant alcohol flavor is a bit much.
