On tap at the brewery earlier this evening.

Looks excellent in the glass. Crystal clear medium reddish amber body with a decent tan head leaving scattered lacing.

Sweet malty aroma. The smoke aspect is hard to find. Then again, my nose isn't the best.

On tasting, smoke appears, and has been handled with care. Very nice balance between sweet and smoke, some caramel notes.

Mouth medium, finish smooth and clean.

Overall, another fine beer from Shy Bear. I appreciate their willingness to brew harder to find styles. Thos evening I had a mild, an alt, and a rye ipa.

Shy Bear Brewing "Alt of Personality"
$6/pint on tap at the brewery on 13 August 2022

Notes: The body is a deep copper, almost chestnut brown in color, beneath a short head of light tan foam. The aroma is sweetish and bready with some golden caramel and smoke. It seems like Beechwood smoke to me. The flavor follows with some additional reddish caramel, almost burnt sugar, and floral, herbal, and lightly spicy hop notes. The smoke is clear in the flavor but doesn't go too far, and doesn't mask any of the complexity of the malt - very nicely balanced. Along with the the bitterness (listed at 30 IBUs) also balances superbly against the malt. It finishes dry with lingering smoke, woodiness, and light herbs. In the mouth it's medium bodied on the lower end and gently crisp with a fine-bubbled, seemingly natural carbonation. Both the altbier and rauchbier styles are perfectly done, and merged into one, creating a beer that's complex and compelling yet still highly quaffable. Brewers from both Dortmund and Bamberg would be proud to have produced this beer.
