Shy Bear Brewing "Tripel The Light Fantastic"
$9/500 ml brown glass bottle without production codes or freshness dating

Notes via stream of consciousness: Oddly there's no volume listed on the label, which I though was a Federal requirement, but it was sold as a 500 ml bottle and it appears to be just that and I'm assuming that if it's only sold in-house the labeling doesn't matter. Anyway, it's poured a clear orange body beneath a short head of white foam. I see very tiny bubbles moving steadily upwards within, suggesting that it's got a kind of natural carbonation to it, and that it's also got some body to it. The down side is that I don't see a whole lot of bubbles which suggests that it's got a lower carbonation level than usually expected of a Tripel. In the nose I'm finding a sweet, sugary maltiness, lots of fruitiness, some delicate spiciness, and a subtle touch of yeasty phenolics. The flavor follows and the fruitiness delivers notes of banana, plum, white grape, gooseberry, ripe lychee, Marsala wine, and both golden and black raisin. There's also some clove/bubble gum and a swirl of dusty earthiness. The malt is sweet, sugary like rock candy, a touch honeyish, and mildly grainy. There's a little bit of spiciness to it that might be from the yeast of might be from the alcohol, I can't tell, but either way the alcohol is really well hidden. In the mouth it's full bodied with a gentle caress of soft carbonation on the tongue. I knew from looking at it that it would be low in carbonation and it is. Unfortunately, that's not great as it leaves it a little on the sugary side whereas some more acidity and bite from carbonation can help to balance it. The low carbonation also allows the head to drop readily and then you lose lacing as well. That's it's downfall. I initially looked at the bottom of the bottle for lees wondering if they'd tried to bottle condition it but I didn't really see anything. I would hope that they did try to, but regardless it's a little flat in the end. Still, I'm very happy with this beer because the malt flavor is great, the sweetness level is good, the yeast character is fantastic, and the alcohol is kept in check. If you have a chance to grab this one you should, and I hope they brew it again in the future.
