This double IPA showcases the Chinook hop and blends the wise dank flavors of the West Coast IPA with the warring juicy tropical fruit flavors of the East Coast IPA, providing the best of both worlds.

2-month old can poured into a Spieglau tulip. The desciption includes mention of West Coast IPA influences, but this thing is pretty fiercely in the NE IPA camp.

Absolutely gorgeous IIPA. Honestly looks like a big Tree House beer with a dark pineapple juice body of hazy, glowing liquid and a massive head of bright-white, tightly-compact bubbles that provides fantastic lacing. Absolute juice bomb appearance. If the coloring wasn't quite so murky it would be close to perfect.

Very dank and very fruit-forward on the nose, living up to the description. Overripe stone and tropical fruits dominate, with some sweet citrus lurking underneath. Very dank and grassy but doesn't venture into weedy or oniony territory. Quite bready with some wonderful floral notes and a slight piney quality. Bit of a powdered sugar vibe, as well, but that may just be the net result of the medley of sweet fruit aromas. A really good nose but not a great nose, as there's little nuance or layers to it. Somewhat disappointing given the focus on being a mix of West Coast and East Coast influences.

Taste is more of the same, with some pleasant dankness but massive waves of overripe fruit. There's some semi-sweet and pithy ruby red grapefruit in the background that tries to provide a little balance, but the sweet stone and tropical fruits are kind of overwhelming. Unfortunately there's also a sharp, green starchiness at play that makes the tasting experience a little abrasive. I love big beers that ramp things up to eleven yet still find some balance and harmony. Unfortunately this one is lacking that harmony and is really in your face with the sweetness and burn.

As expected given the look, the feel is wonderful silky, creamy, and coating. Unfortunately that coating means lingering hop burn and a lot of residual sweetness on the teeth and tongue. The 8% is pretty well hidden but you still know it's a big beer because some of the component parts are so strong.

Glad to have tried it and certainly not a bad beer, but in a world chalked full of incredible hazies, this isn't one that I would intentionally come back to.

A lightly hazed, golden straw, with a two-inch frothy white head. The head drops to a veil, leaving sticky spots of lace on a Spieglau IIPA glass.

The aroma contains sweet pineapple, followed by orange juice. Mango forms a backdrop and eventually grapefruit takes over.

Athena is an aggressively bitter diety who throws blobs of pinesap. Other flavors are overwhelmed by the bitter pine and damp mildew. Those flavors include over-ripe apricot and a failed attempt at late sweetness. The finish is long, strong, and unsurprisingly bitter. That bitterness burrows through the tongue and throat.

A full body and smooth, juicy texture works with a moderate amount of fine carbonation. Alcohol is above expectations, possibly elevated by the bitterness and astringency. The astringency, by the way, is very high -- just short of enamel peeling.

This is a strong IPA. Mind you, it is quite good, although more powerful than the style would suggest.

On tap at Mortalis Brewing Company in Avon, NY.

This one pours a super hazy golden orange color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like a great use of Chinook- there's a nice clean piney aroma here, with some marijuana, dank orange juice, and mango.

It's hard to nail Chinook in a NE-style IPA, and this basically does it. It's got such a clean and zesty bitterness, piney, slightly grassy, and just a hint dank. There's tons of pulpy orange juice, and just a little bit of a green burn on the finish. In about a week, that'll probably go away.

This is light bodied, crisp, and mostly clean, other than the aforementioned slight burn. It's very drinkable.

This is a nice use of an old school hop in a new school IPA.
