This Imperial Stout is an exploration into balancing heat/spice with specialty selected grains and ingredients. The first in its series, Alecto, The Fury of Anger, (Alecto punishes those guilty of moral crimes such as anger), we added Szechwan peppercorns, Red Chilies, Ancho peppers to a blend of dark maple syrup to create a true sweet heat experience.

Pours rich, dark velvet-brown, with a late-blooming, dense whipped cream, chestnut head. The head reaches 3/4 of in inch before gradually settling to a veil. A fine coating of lace, similar to latte froth, has a golden sparkle while it clings to a PBGC Imperial Snifter.
The aroma meets the expectations in richness presented by its appearance. Dark baked brownie, with licorice, dark chocolate, and mocha, are immediately apparent. All are extremely strong and seem to be playing for the same team. The middle brings out blackberry, while introducing nutmeg and possibly the spirit of Cognac.
This beer is unquestionably a Pastry Stout. The progression is rapid and tremendous. Cherries unfold to present dark chocolate while sweetness transitions to heat, which then gives way to nutmeg and cinnamon. A slight tartness comes out before sharp sweetness and the finish is overwhelmed by pepper and spice. The spice leaves an indelible trail from the lips across the tongue, brushing against the cheeks, down the throat, and into the pit of my stomach. The finish is strong and everlasting, adding notes of maple syrup and ginger.
Alecto is dense, with a syrupy, yet coarse, texture. Alcohol is strong, with mild heat of its own. Fine carbonation attempts to lift the peppery spice, only to drill holes in the tongue. Residual sugar is surprisingly less than expected.
Mortalis is proving to have a few lines of very interesting and unique beer. This one would stand up to a good cigar, dessert, or fireside while stargazing. I enjoyed it while reading.
