This Imperial Milk stout blends layers of milk chocolate, malted chocolate, cocoa, Madagascar vanilla, marshmallow, and graham cracker. The body is full and decadent from the subtle addition of milk sugar. Then we aged the beer for a total of 16 months in a blend of Caribbean rum, Knob Creek, Heaven Hill, and Buffalo Trace barrels. What else would you expect from the Goddess of love?

Pink wax.

I’ve had a few non-BA Mortalis stouts. They’ve all been good, although somewhat toward the “muddy” / “chewy” side of mouthfeel, which is not a bad thing. This BA offering brings more of a cleaner mouthfeel, crisper, more barrel bite to balance what is otherwise a similarly chewy base.

They might be more famous for those super-fruited sours, but they make some world class stouts, too.

This one pours a dark and silky looking black, with a small head, and not much lacing.

This smells like creamy milk chocolate, vanilla, graham cracker, marshmallow, fudge, rum, and oak.

There was an attempt to leave this one longer in barrels to give it a deeper barrel character, and I very much appreciate that initiative. The rum comes through most strongly of the various barrels in the blend, giving a sweet and spiced character that melds well with the layered oak and graham character. As expected, it's very fudgy, with milk chocolate running throughout, with some darker cocoa tones, too. There's also a solid, but not overwhelming marshmallow and vanilla character here as well.

This is medium bodied, silky and super smooth, with no real booziness to it.

I hope Mortalis keeps leaving their stouts in barrels longer - it helped cut the big sweetness down and enhanced the drinkability for me.
