This Imperial Stout was brewed in collaboration with Imprint Beer Co. The thick luscious base was aged 16 months in a Willet rye barrel before being conditioned on Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, Dominican cacao nibs, and toasted coconut. The adjuncts bring flavors of charred oak, vanilla, chocolate covered espresso beans, creamy toasted coconut, and ice cream.

The nose comes off initially as a bit muddled and off, but really opens up nicely in the glass. Rich, chocolatey coffee dominates the nose, with the coconut taking a back seat. The palate is sweet and decadent; espresso ice cream & coconut candy.

This one pours a very dark black color, with a small head, and not much lacing.

This smells like coconut cream, very roasty coffee, caramel, bourbon, oak, and vanilla.

On the first sip, this felt like it was gonna be much too sweet, with a very creamy and candy like coconut flavor – tasty, but overwhelming. But as the beer settles on the palate, there’s actually a lot of barrel here, and a really bold, roasty, and super chocolatey bright coffee note.

This is medium bodied, just a slight bit of syrupy feeling, with no booziness.

This is definitely one of my favorite stouts lately from Mortalis – not completely expected, as Imprint isn’t really my favorite brewery.

If I can read right the bottle says 16.1 ounces, which is certainly new to me. Great purple wax with cool blue dots sprinkled about. Nice presentation.

The pour is manifestly cool – the stout has tiny bubbles racing from bottom to top. I’ve witnessed this effect in a Kolsch or even IPA, but never in a stout. Big old head. The nose is interesting: bourbon, brown marshmallow, scorched brown sugar. Cool.

Written In The Stars – Barrel Aged is scrumptious; high-end liquid candy with a bite. Bourbon is strong & suffuses the senses, throat, palate, stomach lining, & if I wait long enough, my colon. Lolling behind comes strong molasses, soft smooth coffee, creamed coconut ice cream, leather soaked in brown sugar. Coconut becomes more erect as the beer warms (or perhaps that’s me). Full & sticky. If it weren’t for the overwrought sweetness, I could drink a small pitcher of this. Maybe more.

My first Mortalis stout & I want more. One of the finest stouts I’ve had in some time & it doesn’t wear on the palate with the drinking. Top shelf & not far from Asa perfection.

If the scale went higher, it would score that for everything. All the great attributes of regular WITS, but with a heavy barrel presence. Darkest chestnut brown color. No head. Pours seemingly entirely still. Nose is hard to pinpoint, like a warm
liquid tootsie roll with some leather and some cherry. It’s been aged in Willett barrels reportedly, but has an almost Woodford Reserve type unique spiciness to the flavor. Loads of coconut floaties sparkling like stars on top. Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is strong but smooth. Super heavy mouthfeel, though a scant bit lighter than the regular WITS. Glass does not get the oil-slick residue as with the regular WITS either, though it does get a light coating. If there weren’t limits, I’d be back to buy more.
