Drank from a 1 pint .9 fl. oz / 500 ml bottle purchased at Ball Square Fine Wines, Somerville, MA
Served in a snifter
Big thanks to Jess and David for this thoughtful gift.
The beer poured a super dense and oily looking, near pitch black. A thin, mocha colored film covered part of the liquid, but it quickly transformed into a fine collar. Some spotty lacing cascaded down the glass after the first few sips.
The aroma was sweet and pastry like but somewhat strange. I had a difficult time pegging the source of the sweetness. Chocolate chip cookies perhaps came to mind, but more like pre-packaged, artificially flavored cookies versus homemade ones. Artificial vanilla was noticeable as well. Some turbinado sugar too. Bit of caramel. Unfortunately, I did not pick up any pretzel or butterscotch notes.
The flavor profile was similar to the nose, but the butterscotch presence was definitely more apparent. Rich and malty up front. Sweet caramel malts dominated, but some roastiness came through as well. Lots of butterscotch too. Store bought, artificially flavored chocolate chip cookies were also noticeable. Good dose of artificial vanilla as well. There was a salty, pretzel-like note on back end and the finish. Some booze, brown sugar and roast lingered after the swallow.
The mouthfeel was definitely the most impressive aspect of the beer. It was full bodied. Rich, oily and slick. The liquid contained a fine, subtle effervescence that worked nicely for this style.
I usually find Mortalis Brewing’s pastry stouts to be excessively sweet and artificial tasting, and this beer follows that trend. If you buy a bottle of this, I would definitely recommend splitting it with at least one or two other people.

Very tasty, taste follows smell of cookies and pretzels. Great imperial stout but VERY sweet. Drinking the whole 16.9oz bottle would be a tough ask, but half a glass is the perfect amount!
