This Coffee Stout is a yearly release to celebrate Halloween. We aged the base in Rip Van Winkle and Weller Special Reserve barrels for 18 months and then conditioned on marshmallows and Mostra Philippine Heritage Microlot coffee. The result is creamy vanilla, dark chocolate, spiced oak, and deep roasted coffee beans. I am Zuul. I am the Gatekeeper.

On tap at The Richmond in Rochester, NY.
This one pours a very dark black color, with a small head, and a little bit of lacing.
This smells like very roasty coffee, vanilla, marshmallow, spicy oak, rich dark chocolate, and caramel.
This is really one of the better barrel aged stouts from Mortalis lately. There’s much more barrel than typical lately, with lots of spicy oak, some caramel, and vanilla, with the marshmallow really popping against the barrel here. The coffee is the dominant flavor here, bitter, roasty, and lots of dark chocolate. It’s overall definitely less sweet than you’d expect from Mortalis stouts.
This is creamy and thick, with no real booziness, and a very high drinkability.
This was really up my alley, and executed quite well.

Had on tap at Mortalis. Now drinking bottle bought at that time (Oct 2022-> July 2023.
Notes are from current experience with aged bottle pour. Similar but wonderfully better than last Fall.
Characteristic Mortalis rich dark brew…in this case a deep darkest brown; almost impenetrable to light. Offers soft head that lingers as rich tan head then results in halo without lacing.Trace yeast collection in glass at conclusion.
Nose is a sensational cascade of coffee, chocolate, figs, vanilla, marshmallow…think waterfall splashing on and around you…scent after scent standing out; merging; swirling. :)
Taste mirrors but includes some toasted wood; more spicey than nose. Dark fruit erupts a bit more.
This is a wonderfully rich sipping experience that like the best…evolves as beer opens to air and warms a bit.
Body is a bit overly thick and creamy. Probably too chewy and heavy for lots of people… understand. But this is my beer and my wheelhouse… and I still love it! ABV burns, but only slightly… but it is not inconsistent with 13%abv. Reminds me a bit of some of Avery’s brews “burn” wise.
Overall a “typical” Mortalis big stout that I always enjoy… but this one kicks in with layers of increasingly complex nose that really stands out.
Wonderful!
