Drank from a 1 pint/16 fl. oz. can purchased on Tavour
03/05/24
Served in a tulip
Pretty extreme appearance. The beer poured a super viscous and completely opaque, deep violet hue that was reminiscent of a blueberry smoothie. The top of the liquid was slick and oily, and the bubbles that ascended to it made this look like a cauldron of witches brew. There was no lacing, but a wall of fine sediment coated the sides of the glass.
The aroma was straightforward but really enjoyable. Ripe banana came through big time. Banana bread perhaps. I thought I picked up lots of sweet, juicy blueberry too, but apparently this was the blackberry. There was a bit of a blackberry-like quality as well though. Hint of creamy lactose and/or vanilla too.
The flavor profile was solid but less sweet and less banana forward than the nose. Fresh blackberry notes dominated up front. Nice balance of tart and sweet. Bit of blueberry too. Banana was noticeable here as well, but it was much more subtle than in the nose. Hint of peach. Big tart lemon/lime notes appeared in the center. I was surprised the beer contained neither. More sweet blueberry on the back end. The beer finished with a touch of berry seed-like bitterness and more tartness. Overall, really well balanced.
The mouthfeel was outstanding. It was extremely viscous and full bodied, like an actual fruit smoothie. The liquid contained a fine, subtle effervescence that gave the beer a bit of lightness on the palate.
Despite the mixed nuts and the shortbread being undetectable, this beer was still really fun and enjoyable. I can always count on Mortalis’s fruited sours to be an interesting yet predictable drinking experience.

This has to be one of the more creative beers I’ve seen from Mortalis. Blackberry and banana is one thing, but the addition of nuts and shortbread cookies sealed the deal for this one. Let’s crack it open and find out what it’s all about
Pours an opaque pinkish purple with absolutely no head or even bubbles of any kind. It still leaves some “lacing” though
The nose is pretty sweet as expected, but there’s a nice tartness as well to keep things in check. I’m picking up on aromas of banana, lemon zest, shortbread cookie, vanilla ice cream, jammy blackberry, light cinnamon, and roasted peanut
It takes a much sweeter turn in taste, and while I don’t prefer that it works for this one. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting banana bread, jammy blackberry, vanilla ice cream, shortbread cookie, strawberry, light milk chocolate, and peanut flour. The swallow brings notes of jammy blackberry, vanilla ice cream, lemon zest, banana bread, roasted peanut, light cocoa powder, and cinnamon
A medium full body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a surprisingly crisp beer. Finishes mostly dry despite the sweetness
This is an odd one for sure but I dig it. They could’ve done more with the nuts
