This Imperial Coffee Stout is brewed with a favorite local coffee and then aged in Elijah Craig 18 year and Heaven Hill barrels for 17 months. It is medium-bodied with loads of coffee and then finishes with flavors of bourbon, cinnamon, pecan, maple, chocolate, and toasted coconut.

Bottled April 2024. A murky brown pour at 53° into my Angry Chair snifter; fast fizzy cinnamon brown head leaves no cap nor ring; no lace and the thinnest of legs on swirl. Strong coffee, nose; no barrel; no coconut. Chocolate fudge; sweet, brown sugar, graham crackers; a tiny bit of coconut on back end. Gooey adjuncty feel, full body; light carbonation; no warmth from 12% ABV. Very sweet; reminds me of angry chair back in the day with its thick fudgy feel; diabetes in a bottle.

This one pours a very dark black color, with a small head, and not much lacing.
This smells like sweet coconut cream, toasted coconut, milk chocolate, caramel, maple, and a general nuttiness.
As Above So Below uses a fairly sweet coffee – Jamaican Me Crazy – so extra flavor additions aren’t necessarily needed. But! This is still quite tasty. The blend of coconut with the coffee gives this is a nutty sweet flavor that almost tricks my mind into reading peanut butter. There’s the requisite sweet candied coconut here, some sweet caramelly coffee goodness, the lightest hint of roast, and milk chocolate. This is definitely sweet, but not as sweet as some of these concoctions can get. There’s very little barrel character.
This is thick, not quite syrupy, and lightly carbonated, with very little booziness.
Of the new even more pastry variants of BA As Above So Below, the marshmallow version is a bit better, but this is still a treat.

This fires on all cylinders. It’s dark and menacing in appearance, but brings a light intoxicating aroma of nuts and caramel, nothing even remotely coconut. The flavor…is…amazing. Whatever combination of malts, hops, and adjuncts this is pure decadence while retaining a refined air of brewing and barreling skill. The tastes linger FOREVER. The barrels are entirely complementary. Mouthfeel is thick, but retains a clean profile. Alcohol hits like a ton of bricks for 12%. Great job Mortalis!
