Metallic Red Wax.
This Imperial Stout was aged 2 years in a Heaven Hill and 9 months in a fresh Amburana barrel. Then, we conditioned the beer on Madagascar vanilla. The silky smooth body is matched with notes of dark fruits, woody cinnamon, charred oak, and creamy sweet finish. Heed the darkness and shadows.

Poured from a bottle at fridge temp. Pours an extremely thick black with zero head. Phenomenal looking beer!
The nose screams amburana. Cinnamon, slight clove, biscuits, licorice, vanilla, bourbon, slight chocolate note.
The taste nicely matches the nose. Again that wonderful cinnamon note that reflects the amburana. Vanilla is also strong here. What a great combination. Black licorice, dark chocolate, some roasty flavors, oak, very slight hint of tar, and mild toffee.
The mouthfeel is thick and creamy, with a nice amburana aftertaste. Very low carbonation. Lovely.

This one pours a very dark black color, with a very small head, and not much lacing.
This smells absolutely fantastic. There’s so much character coming from the amburana – it’s a deep woodiness, cinnamon, cedar, and baking spices, with a nice creamy vanilla aroma, and milk chocolate.
The spice here is really, really punchy, and dominates any of the other barrel character from the bourbon. BA Erebus is a very heavy but very delicious stout to begin with, so adding the intensity of the amburana makes for a very decadent, very tasty, but ultimately also very taxing pastry stout experience. I split the bottle with one other buddy, and 8 ounces was definitely a journey. This would be perfect in a flight size pour, as it’s super compelling and super unique. The vanilla and heavy spice character melds well with the intensely fudgy character of the base stout.
This is thick, almost a bit syrupy, but not boozy at all.
Mortalis is really taking an interesting swing with this one, and I like it. It’s definitely really intense and won’t be for everybody.
