When our friends from Barreled Souls came to visit and taste through some barrels, we knew a Barleywine was destined to be involved. The chosen blend brings together Bacchus, aged 1,166 days in Willett Rye barrels, and Ophion, aged 1,107 days in Willett Family Estate Bourbon barrels. The result is a rich, silky-bodied Stout layered with intense notes of dark chocolate–covered cherries, ripe figs, vanilla, and caramelized brown sugar.

Looks fabulous in a Mortalis mini snifter. Clear, dark motor oil with intense oily legs all over the glass. Aroma is slightly subdued, but getting hints of cherry and wet barrel. Flavor is boozy, with a great interplay of sweet barleywine and dark stout, possibly heavier toward the barleywine side, which is fine by me. Mouthfeel is slick with long residual oiliness. Alcohol bite is there, all in a bourbon flavor sans astringency. Very nice. Cheers to Milo, to whom we had to say goodbye today. The goodest boy.

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a small head, and a little bit of lacing.
This smells like rich fudgy chocolate, bittersweet caramel, rye whiskey, vanilla, maple, chocolate-covered cherries, and some general nuttiness.
This is fantastic, which is not surprising as it’s a blend of two very, very good beers. There is really nicely chocolatey and coffee-forward, but with interesting additional dimensions of brown sugar, praline, maple, cherry, oak, rye whiskey, and barrel spice.
This is medium bodied, thick, creamy, and not too syrupy, with very little booziness to it.
It would be real hard to not enjoy something like this.
